The Earned Evening

The Earned Evening
"Amsterdam" by Nothing But Thieves

Late this month, we got some good sun. This Saturday, we went studying at a café around the Jean-Baptiste Lebas park to hang out in the sun while sipping coffee and solving differential equations.

As I somewhat implied last week, the motivation to excel in classes is nonexistent. This means that the bar for my studying for exams is to pass. Getting 50%. This, to me at least, seems achievable for almost all of these 5 upcoming exams with studying on the eve of exams.

Suddenly, my sister called me to invite me to her place for dinner. If this had been even a year ago, I would have given a strict no. I had exams on Monday. On this particular Saturday, before my last exams in Lille, I decided to go. I wanted to go, and if I managed to get my work done during the day, it would be a nice time to unwind.

The dinner turned out to be a cathartic evening. Upon arrival, I ran 15km around the Septentrion park and then sat down at the table with family friends and the grandparents. It was a lovely moment to share around the table.

It was also special since it became clearer that my time in Lille is coming to an end. I have less than a month left here. This dinner also felt like a farewell of sorts to a phase. The work, the run and the creeping feeling of a chapter ending are what made it cathartic. It was an earned evening, and there was no guilt.

This song has some of the cathartic energy that I felt this Saturday. Have a listen!
