Starting Over
So I am writing this post from Montreal. I am here now. School starts today. Still a bit funny that I actually made it, and now I am here till Christmas. At the time of writing this, I have not even been here for 48 hours. A few things have already caught my eye.
They do not have front-facing license plates. For some reason, it disturbs me more than it should, especially when there is a RAM truck a meter taller than me driving towards me at full speed. Feels like out of a movie.
In Montreal, they speak Québécois. This I knew. Yet I would call it a language barrier coming from France. I needed to make the barista repeat it twice for me to understand that she asked "un petit ou un grand". Sometimes I resort to English to avoid misunderstandings.
The houses are big. Like, the street I live on is right between the universities McGill and Concordia. My 20-min walk to school is a walk between skyscrapers. It is impressive. Yet I really do not understand why you need buildings this tall. Okay, I mean Montreal's population is the same as that of Estonia, so I guess it might make some sense, but my brain struggles to understand it.
Yet there is nature. I live right at the foot of Mount Royal. So within five minutes walk, I have a forest and skyscrapers. Not too shabby. The climb is quite fast. I went for a run to see the view, and within 30 minutes I was up and down.
Also, the most random thing is me meeting my Estonian high school mates' parents within 5 hours of arriving in Montreal. I did not expect to speak Estonian in these streets. Yet I guess it happens.
For now, I have interacted very little with locals, spoke to a few frat-mates who are from around, but nothing too deep. I feel like I have more social energy than the others, which is funny since that is usually not the case. It could have something to do with me being in a new country without knowing much about the country or the people.
We shall see how the school experience unfolds. Today's the first day, and my classes are from 8:30 till 21:30 with a few breaks.
This Week's Suggestions:
Thanks to my roommate in Liège, I really got into rock this Summer. Here's a nice little tune from 2006 that I enjoy.
Till next week!
