From this Monday, I am in full-on exam-project season. This week I have a few thesis presentations whilst having 6 exams to prepare for the following week. Thankfully, I do not have many classes, but the workload stays worrisome.

This second semester has been a gradual decline in motivation. The novelty of the specialty wore off, and the problems are more visible than ever. The educational team is flawed, and the content we consume is undigestible. Furthermore, for the exam, all you need is to work through the exams of previous years.

After 2 full years in my engineering school, I have realised that the way to be successful in exams would be to just master the previous exams on the subject. Of course, when exam performance is decoupled from learning, you optimise for the metric. It is completely different from the experience I had in prepa, where only god knew what was on the exam and the only hope to have a decent grade was to understand the subject.

This decline in motivation is general, it seems. My peers on group projects seem to have completely detached from all schoolwork. Still, I hold myself to a standard others don't — giving the last touch before anything goes out.

The wild thing is that some people do not even bother checking in if the work has been sent. The frustrating part for me is spending my time on work that others do not even care to look at. It feels like a bad deal.

That being said, I console myself with the thought that in 3 weeks, this is over. I still resent that my abilities were never properly tested academically. I did find secondary responsibilities to fill the gap — treasurer of the student council, managing conflicts over a 20k€ budget. Without that, the these two years would have been an underwhelming experience.

I have already mentioned this great Estonian pop-folk band in my previous posts. The chorus of this particular song sings “Every ram has its own Michaelmas Day”. In this context meaning that karma shall catch up to you eventually.

That’s all I got for today!
