Analog Mind
This past week, I have questioned my creativity. I do have a blog, I do mix from time to time, and I do journal. Yet most of my creations have a digital output. This blog, my mixes – all of these are digital, dependent on the existence of a computer.
I do consider it creating, yet after noticing the fact, I felt a slight lack in the physical creation. It is different. Manual creation feels slower, more demanding, more real, more creative. I have recently experienced this while trying to DJ with vinyl, the analogue way.
The barrier to entry for these kinds of manual tasks is higher. Tasting the rewards of the work takes time, and thus, keeping going takes fight. Yet the results feel so much more tangible, as if they had more value.
In my flat, two people have played the guitar for a long time. It is such a pleasure to observe the simplicity with which they can jam, test out sounds and progressions. All the while dropping in a song or two that they enjoy. Just a little sidenote of how much of a pleasure it is to have live music at home.
For what's left of this summer, I have two goals: learn to mix on vinyl and try as many analogue manners of self-expression as possible.
P.S. If you have ideas or are expressing yourself in any way, shape or form, I am open to hearing all about it!
This Week's Suggestions:
The title of this post is not coming from my own creativity but from others. These are people from my school who inspire me. They started by creating a radio show, and on the side, also started dabbling in visually heightening musical or simply art installations through visual jockeying and light shows.
Currently, in the north of France, they are the only group able to give such quality in production. I had the pleasure of meeting them through bpm and have admired their work ever since working with them on some of our events. Feels like a coherent reference to bring to a post about creativity.
🎶 "Pinegrove Council" by Save Your Atoll:
So I went to another BLUR event this weekend and saw some mixing on vinyl. Somehow, my Shazam managed to catch this wild song. It is a very earthy song. Have a listen to be transported into a jungle as I was on Saturday evening.
That's all for this Monday!
