Invisible Walls

Invisible Walls
"Shadowman" by Deki Alem

Recently, I have thought a lot about headphones as antisocial behaviour, especially since I have the reflex to put on headphones anywhere I go. It is somewhat of an invisible wall that you set up between yourself and others, a "do not disturb" in real life.

On top of that, I feel like in situations in which I just pop my headphones in, it is a question of stimulation. I want to fill the silence. This is not only problematic for the social cost I mentioned, but it also brings up the question of the appreciation of music.

I consider myself to be someone who cares a lot about music, so this is a contradiction in my values. How can I say that I care about music if I consume it without intent? That is a different topic, though.

I started more actively choosing not to put on headphones, at the gym, at school and on the street. There is a clear difference to me. More conversations happen that would not have otherwise. People seem to be more welcoming and friendly.

Even if we are more connected than ever through the internet, organic human interaction is rare. It is so much easier not to take that step into vulnerability. The headphones help ensure it.

For my personal case, I will keep making room for spontaneous interaction, as best I can. Noise-cancelling headphones are a great tool to focus – and that should be their purpose, not avoidance. When we consciously take the invisible wall down, we are also more receptive to the world around us.

A lovely song I found earlier this week. To be listened to with intention, of course.

See you next week!
