Working Out as Catharsis

Working Out as Catharsis
"Luchtballon" by Joost

Recently, after the Spring Storm, I really got into the gym again. The weather is good so finding motivation to work out is easier. That being said sometimes the going gets a little rough. The army is coming to an end and with going back to university there is quite a bit of stress already building up.

I want to talk about working out as a form of catharsis. It can help canalise bad energy out of your system and give a hard reset. At least that has been the case for me. Getting in a small workout can be life-changing even when too lazy or tired.

On Tuesday, I was really tired from our sports day, during which we played ball games and did other challenges to entertain ourselves. I helped to organise the event and it was exhausting. At around 19h30 when I was planning on taking a nap before our evening lineup, one of my soldiers was like "Yo Paroll, let's go get a workout in."

My response was "Pffff faaaakkkk..." and after a slight pause "Okay fine let's do it." And let me tell you, it was such a good workout, I got to bond with that soldier and got a good pump in. That is one of the great parts about the army – the mutual pushing of each other to be better and try harder.

Anyway, back to the point. Working out is not only beneficial for physical longevity but also a way to remain mentally stable and present. In recent times it has been such a good method to canalise negative energy and make it easier to take a step back and reflect.

Yes, that is indeed the europapa man. I happened upon this song recently, it is a funny one that has some good dutch bounce. Check it out, the video is also very special.

Here's a podcast on the topic of the gym. Chris Williamson is a very straightforward person who gets to the heart of it right away without stirring the pot too long. This podcast is with Menno Henselmans, a fitness coach, researcher and author.

That will be all for today, cheers!
