Why I Wrote a 28-Page Report Nobody Asked For

Why I Wrote a 28-Page Report Nobody Asked For

I am currently at my country house in Saaremaa. I just finished the first version of my internship report. It's 28 pages. The interesting thing is that this wasn't actually required. While my school only required a poster presentation for September, I chose to write a full 28-page report (watch me still have to do the poster).

The reason I did it is to have some kind of proof that I did something. It is also a good base for the upcoming internships I will have to do next summer and the year after. I created a blank version of the document that is way easier to fill out, while also having a fully finished report.

I am unsure of how I convinced myself to do it since there is genuinely no real obligation, and thus, the motivation behind it was confusing. It is very useful for me in the future, but this kind of motivation without a clear deadline is usually not enough.

Actually, there was one deadline. I requested to have access to the company's ecosystem for two weeks after the internship was over in order to go through all the work that I did. That deadline is today. So, technically, there was somewhat of a deadline. I am still pleasantly surprised that I went ahead and did the thing.

I was already in the vibe of working on my career, so Saturday evening, I decided to review my resume. I used the Harvard template, which I keep seeing referenced as the gold standard, so now I have that going for me. Claude gave my resume a rating of 8.5/10 and said that I should get interviews at good companies if I tailor it for the role.

The key improvements were the simple structure of the Harvard template, as well as the numerical data added. Here are some examples: Led a team of 10, managed and allocated €80,000 budget, organised 6 events across various venues in Lille with attendances up to 800.

The next part of the plan is to start looking and applying to internships for next summer. I will be studying mechanical engineering next year, which is a good direction for the role I will be looking into.

My most recent idea was Bolt, the Estonian company which operates across multiple sectors, from sharing cars to scooters, while also offering taxi services and food delivery. The company's most important focus is not mechanical engineering since it is a service-offering company, but there is a small slot for the mechanical design and engineering of the electrical scooters, which could be interesting for me.

To conclude, it is summer and I am already working on figuring out next summer. Going through the internship report and my resume, I am happy with what I have created. Next, it is about finding what could interest me for work!
