Why I am studying engineering
"Every act of creation is first an act of destruction." Picasso
The first reason is safety – keeping my options open. In high school, I was pretty good at sciences. This being said, I did not go out of my way to learn more. The things taught in class were sufficient for me. When the time came to go to university I was unsure of what to do. I ended up choosing engineering as something I might be decent at and something that keeps as many doors open as possible. Furthermore, I told myself that it is easier to study psychology or languages after doing a science degree rather than the other way around.
At the moment, I perceive the choice of keeping doors open as somewhat of a flaw. I did not act with much intention. I went with the path of least resistance by default. This being said, I did and still do not have any higher education alternatives which I would like to hurl myself at. There is the option to direct my studies towards a more specific science since at the moment my reach is very broad and not very specific. I do not have anything in mind though and I do not see dropping out as an option. Doing something is better than doing nothing at all.
Even though my choice of engineering might have been done by default there are things I am happy with. I am grateful for the genuine awe of the world that comes with studying sciences. I understand some natural phenomena far better. I understand their functioning and flaws. I can even read some scientific papers without getting completely lost. This understanding of mathematics and other concepts makes me grateful for being on this space ball and for being able to even learn such things in the first place.
Another positive side effect of engineering so far is that the challenges of the studies make me believe I can think. Put it like that it sounds absurd since anyone can think, right? What I mean is that in a situation where I encounter a problem which seems unsurmountable I do not run away. I go head-to-head with it. I have confidence that I can solve a problem, I just have to think. This confidence is formed thanks to my encounter with rather unsolvable problems on a daily basis in physics, mathematics, chemistry and engineering sciences.
To conclude, I chose engineering as a default but I have found that it has led to great things such as the discovery of the world and of myself. That is precisely why I stand by the idea of doing something rather than nothing at all – stagnation is the enemy.
This Week's Suggestions:
🎶 "Fukk Sleep" by A$AP Rocky featuring FKA twigs:
I exited the number 12 metro at Jules Joffrin at 19:36. I had a few minutes of walking before getting to the restaurant. While walking, I put on my earphones and started looking for music to walk to. I gave up very soon and pressed on shuffle and play of my liked songs. The song that came on created a nostalgic yet piercingly novel experience when walking down a street in the 18th arrondissement. With the slow bass and the melodic vocals, A$AP Rocky has created a powerful song which seems to match rather well with an early evening walk in Paris.
