The Terrace Test

The Terrace Test
“Fast or Slow” by Mish and Sofia

Something a friend of mine said a few weeks back in Brussels was that I am, for him, the person who sips coffee on a terrace and reads a book. I would never consider myself to be that free, but the comment made me rethink my identity.

My recent travels have made me think of the importance of side quests. This weekend I ended up in Nantes. I saw an opening in my calendar and decided to take action and visit a childhood friend.

What I admire with this friend and her boyfriend is that they experiment with things and naturally take on these side quests.

It is an engineer with a professional dancer. On the one side you have someone who is structure and prediction-driven, on the other someone who is the fluid element that adapts to the situation. This creates a great balance.

The first day we discovered together a café, a restaurant, a thrift shop and viewing platforms that they themselves had been wanting to check out. The way that they presented these ideas of trying out new things felt so organic, as if it were the default.

Nantes confirmed what Brussels suggested. Side quests are a good way to calibrate yourself. Turns out that over the past month I have found myself more than once on a terrace reading a book.
