The Level of Systems

I am moving back into my apartment in Lille. I have already gotten some of the administrative details out of the way and secured a French phone number and bank account. These two are the pillars of getting anything done in France. That is why it was my first priority to get those out of the way.

I have not lived alone in a while, so getting standards back up there as I had them before is crucial. Coming home from the barracks for the weekend, even if home alone, is not comparable. Furthermore, first impressions matter! I think it will not be difficult to get into it again since I enjoy structure (maybe even too much).

The reason I want to get my systems down properly at the very start is because of this quote:

"You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." James Clear

It just is true, because we are incapable of being locked in constantly. So in times when we are unable to give it our all, we fall to the level of our systems and routines. If those routines have a negative effect in the long run, we are signing up for a vicious cycle for life.

On the other hand, if our routines are just a little better than neutral. So on the idea of James Clear, improving by 1% per day is enough to substantially change the course of things.

This post is as much of a wake-up call for the reader as for myself. It is time to start adulting again. Summer's over, time to get some work in again!

P.S. A single day in and I am already fully set up in my apartment. Everything just fell right into place.

This Week's Suggestions:

💡 "The lost art of accomplishment without burnout" Cal Newport on Big Think:

Some good thoughts on how to avoid burnout. I have practised some variations of these myself and approve of them. Good little snippet of healthy productivity.

This Estonian song is nice and bumpy. It has good lyrics and is overall short and sweet. Give it a spin!

Till next time, when I'll be older but maybe not wiser!
