The Cherry on the Cake

For any product to have "good" value for the client it has to be better than what is asked as compensation. Who does not want a good deal after all? That being said this is somewhat counterintuitive when selling something. Why give more than you get paid for? It sounds like I'm saying to undervalue your work but on the contrary.

The thing that initiated this subject again, is that I went to the hairdresser this Saturday. I paid for my haircut and walked out. I am happy with the result, but the process of getting my hair cut was somewhat underwhelming. The service was fine, but I was not satisfied for some reason. I met up with a friend right after and spoke about it. I got what I paid for and was not satisfied, why?

It was missing the details. It is not only for services but any product that this applies to. Paying a sum of money that is past a certain threshold you come to expect the full service – a good deal, if you will. Getting the job done is not enough. The cherry on the cake matters.

No one wants to be mediocre. Yet we tend to focus too much on one at a time – the details or getting the job done. It has to be a malleable mix of both. Easier said than done of course. That's when practice comes in. Creating a great product demands mastery which can only be achieved with time and effort.

That being said, creating a product and giving your all to it is still possible in the learning stages. One does not have to be a professional to show up and give it your all. Simply doing things thoughtfully can go a long way. It is about being proactive and thinking things through.

To wind it up, giving more than what you get paid for is a good way to build trust and respect with your client. This helps form relationships which tend to be more valuable than any sort of monetary compensation.

P.S. – This is not business advice but simply my analysis. I have read from here and there but have strictly no hands-on experience so take everything with a grain of salt.
