Smile First, Smile More

This previous week was probably the most intense party week of the year for HEI students. The main goal was to choose the BDE (“bureau des élèves”) for the following year. These are the representatives of the school who organise a bunch of events and try to make happen as many projects as possible.
On Wednesday were the revelations — the people being part of the two candidate teams for BDE are kept a secret until that point. Once this information is out start the campaigns. On Thursday there were after-work events from 19 to 01 o’clock. For this, each candidate team privatises a bar and tries to create the best vibes.
On Friday free breakfast and lunch were provided to all students by the two opposing candidates. There were also a bunch of mini-games to win personalised goodies (eco cups, lighters, wristbands etc).
The people being part of the BDE teams have it pretty rough. They get close to no sleep. They need to be on their best behaviour all whilst serving the students. This is the only way to maximise the chance of being voted into the presidency.
Even whilst drowsy and exhausted, all the BDE people managed to stay radiant. From the outside, it was clear that they were all having a great time even though they were running on 2 hours of sleep and probably tons of caffeine. Everyone was smiling. That’s where the inspiration for this piece of writing came from.
I noticed that people are beautiful when they smile. Then I started to ponder on why that is. The smile communicates so much information — the person is comfortable, happy and accepting of the person who is smiled at. I find it incredible that such a simple gesture can have a lasting impact. So smile first and smile more!
This Week's Suggestions:
🎶 "Infinity" by Wilkinson featuring ILIRA, Tom Cane & iiola:
This song just came out last Friday. I am mesmerised by Wilkinson's music production. The singing on this song is crisp and the dancefloor drum and bass drop is there to make it all come to life. It is a very solid song. Give it a spin.
Short and striking, this 3-minute video of John Green is exactly what I needed to hear. He discusses the idea that after high school all of the choices we make narrow down who we are and who we can become. As a renowned writer, he has a way with words – he manages to give pointers and also comfort.
Till next time!
