Relations with Coffee

Relations with Coffee

Caffeine has been a friend of mine for a while now. Not exactly sure of the precise age, but I started drinking coffee in my teens. Of course, I have learned a lot – drinking more than a litre of black coffee can give you the jitters. Drinking it right before bed does mess with your sleep.

I have also deliberately gotten off caffeine for certain amounts of time. Most recently, during our winter camps, when drinking coffee would simply be a waste of water. Coffee itself dehydrates and to make coffee you need to use water – not very tactical when you have a very limited amount of water. That being said, in the cold forest you do not crave coffee as much as you'd think.

During my two years in uni, I made coffee a weapon for studying. I timed it so it would give me maximal benefits. This was thanks to Huberman, a smart neuroscientist man, who tells us that:

"By delaying caffeine consumption for 90 to 120 minutes after waking, Huberman suggests that the body’s natural adenosine levels will taper down, reducing the likelihood of an afternoon energy slump." from readable pods

So basically instead of waking with coffee, I started drinking coffee at around 10 A.M. Surprisingly enough my mornings were not more difficult because of such a switch-up. I suggest you try it out if you have it in yourself. Some people say that they cannot live without their morning coffee but I think they can!

Another way I have used coffee to boost my academic levels is to use it as a trigger. It is a great way to kickstart a study session. The process of making the coffee is calming and helps to smoothly transition from a hectic activity to a deeper state of focus, maybe even achieving the flow!

My recent favourite way of consuming caffeine is cold brews. It was 27°C on Saturday in Tallinn and I did not fancy a warm drink. My solution was to take a mason jar, put some coffee grounds in and pour cold water in. Then I placed it in the fridge to sit for a few hours and boom – a smooth coffee concentrate to dilute and enjoy in warm weather.

James Hoffmann is a coffee enthusiast. He knows it all about coffee. Usually he introduces people to coffee and its different ways of consumption. In this video he takes a more artistic approach and tries to answer an abstract question – the title of the video.

I am very much on the 150 beats-per-minute train lately. Some bouncy and happy trance music that makes your days better. This song is a recent addition to my playlist. It has a Latin trumpet that is assisted by a consistent bounce! Have a listen!
