One Year Ago Today

During the few months I have been back in Lille, I have told the story of my gap year multiple times and from numerous perspectives. I have stood by the point of view that it was not a waste of time and that I did learn from it.
Right around this time last year, I was walking through a snowy forest with a heavy backpack for ten days. Everything was cold and slow. The average pace you move at in heavy snow is around half a kilometre per hour. Considering we usually moved six to seven kilometres per day it was up to 14 hours of stomping our feet.
When you were walking you got warm, but as soon as you stopped you cooled down within 2 minutes. The change of wardrobe was of utmost importance – adding layers when stopping and removing them when moving again. The main reason is that as soon as you sweat it's game over. Well not right away, but you will lose heat a lot faster and when being in it for more than a week no losses are allowed.
The worst feeling was that you were cold to the bone. As in even if you run or do squats, you are only able to warm the outer layer of your skin. Underneath it's cool. This feeling stayed even after the camp for a while. Even in the sauna at the barracks you still felt the presence of cold in your body. I guess that is what ten days in the negative degrees does to you.
When some things feel difficult or out of control I take a moment and look at my reconnaissance ring. It reminds me of the hardship that I went through to gain it whilst simultaneously reminding me that I am capable of more than I think. It is a lovely reminder every once in a while.
Okay. So this song has many layers to it. The sampled song is a romantic war song by composer Raimond Valgre. Nublu has taken it's lyrics and recreated something completely different from it. The drum and bass beat is a lovely addition. The whole thing makes a very pleasant song for the darker days of the year.
See ya!
