One Application Down: Starting My Aerospace Internship Search

One Application Down: Starting My Aerospace Internship Search
"Overnight" by Parcels

I started applying to internships this weekend. It is mostly the aerospace industry which starts the recruiting process this early in the academic year. I created a nice little Excel spreadsheet to track all the different opportunities and document which companies I have sent a resume and cover letter to. Currently, it amounts to one CV and cover letter sent, but it is only the start.

All my friends from the year above me have talked about the struggle of finding an internship in mechanical engineering. The most common sentence I hear is "Have you found your internship yet?"

I have taken their advice seriously and will try to secure something before January 2026. I have no idea if this is optimistic or pessimistic, but I think it is a nice goal to have in mind.

The main difficulty with this field is that most companies want to take you for 6 months as the end-of-studies internship to recruit you full-time after. The time that I have is 4 months, from mid-May to August, since I want to go on an exchange to Spain starting in September.

Yes, this makes things harder, but Spain is worth it because having "Polytechnical Mechanical Engineering in Madrid" on your resume is slick and also I would really enjoy the change of environment.

Even if the standard is 6 months for internships in the aerospace industry, the head of the mechanical engineering department told me to apply to every single offer to make sure to land some interviews.

Part of her reasoning? It tends to be the AI sorting which already throws out your resume without it ever reaching anyone. That is why it is important to also get in contact with people in the company through email or LinkedIn to inform them of your interest.

I thought this whole situation would make me anxious, but it is actually mostly excitement. The technical project we are working on this year already feels a lot more real. I am looking forward to getting into more practical work and figuring out this engineering thing more deeply.

If you have any advice on internship search, I am all ears!

This Week's Suggestions:

Found this song randomly from a friend's Instagram story. Very much a vibe. It is co-produced by Daft Punk, and you can hear it. This is a live version which is extra warm in my opinion!

⚙️ Fabrication d'un pneu:

Here's a video about how car tyres are made. It was given as a starting point for one of our projects. To be honest, I had no clue about these processes and in five minutes, you learn a lot. If that sounds like something you would like to learn this Monday morning, check it out!

That is all for today!
