Just In Case

Just In Case
"High No More" by Hajaj

Imagine you make a plan for a holiday. Everything goes smoothly. You get on the plane and fly out to your destination of dreams. Upon arriving, there was a problem with your luggage, which was sent to a different airport. You are confronted with a rather uncomfortable situation, you will have to spend your holiday without the things you packed in your luggage.

That's where a little preparation goes a long way. In the given scenario, I would hope that you have a smaller bag in the cabin with you. In that bag or on your person you hopefully have your wallet, an ID document and maybe even a spare set of clothes.

Risk prevention is one of the most underestimated assignments. Since the problems we try to prevent in advance seldom present themselves. That being said, when they do present themselves and you have predicted correctly the satisfaction levels go through the roof (of course as a bonus, we get to prevent whatever we called out).

It is not overthinking, it is outthinking. Overthinking is considering the things that can happen and worrying about them. In this case, we consider what can happen and what will be the actions that one takes when they do end up happening.

This can be applied to the civil and army context. Let's take debates for example – if you can foresee your opponent's arguments and their responses to your ideas, you are ahead. When you have already considered all the possible counter-arguments you will less likely be caught off guard and will be able to operate with confidence.

In the army, this comes into play within operational orders and any time being on the field. For example, as a squad leader, I have to present my squad with "in case" scenarios. These are usually for very specific situations i.e. what to do when you get lost, what to do when you get ambushed, what to do if a road is unusable.

For every scenario, this creates the same kind of confidence as with debates. This is important, because usually when we are in a novel situation we freeze. If we have a thread of information in the form of "when this then that" then soldiers will have something to rely on and act upon.

It is important to plan and think through those "in case" scenarios. It can go a long way in making a better product or being a more competent person overall. This is not something for any one field but a general technique to implement in life!

This R&B-sounding tune is lovely. It has the simplest beat but the vocals and lyrics just give it so much flavour. I got lucky and found it when making a Spotify radio of another song 😄

Have a lovely rest of the day!
