Delicate Details

We had another forest camp this week. It was a difficult one. A lot of first times in a restrained amount of time. For example, it was the first time we had to operate in a forest where 2/3 of the time it was complete darkness. For those who do not know, right now in Estonia, the sun rises at 8 A.M and goes down at 4 P.M. This window of daylight is going to keep getting smaller in the upcoming winter months.
As soon as we got back we got criticised, rather fairly, for the lack of discipline in recent times. This lack is not only a thing in the barracks but also in the forest setting. When difficulties arose and simple things were not so simple anymore people started skipping steps. I cannot say that I am better, since I also struggle with discipline in the forest at times.
Our superior kept us from going to town on Friday. This was in order to give us a lecture and also teach us a lesson. I cannot say that I enjoyed it, yet I understood it. Furthermore, my respect for the superior grew, since he himself stayed over hours simply to make things clear for us.
There are three main things that I took away from this Friday. Details are crucial. When creating a piece and the whole is good but some details are missing then it hurts the whole more than we can imagine. The cherry on the cake is important.
Secondly, diffusion of responsibility is a real thing. Simply put, when in a difficult setting with others, we tend to push the responsibility off of our own backs onto others'. It is something we just need to learn to actively surpass.
Thirdly, "How can I be better?" It is a question that we were left with at the end of the speech. Our superior is trying to make us think with our own heads and grow internal, not external discipline.
This Week's Suggestions:
🎶 "These Walls" by Kendrick Lamar :
Thanks to spending more time with different friends in Tallinn I have gotten back into US rap. Mostly Kendrick and some others. This is one of my recent favourites. Kendrick has a way with words and he tends to put those words on well-chosen beats.
That will be all for today, cheers!
