Between Student Life and the Real World
After applying to quite a few internships I am finally getting some answers. It is very cool to hear back from companies and to get a clearer view on how things might be moving forward. Since my first application, I have changed the way that I plan the following few years.
At the end of September I was planning to do a 4 month internship and then go on Erasmus to Madrid. That being said, at that point I was ignorant about the existence of a third option – taking another gap year. I did not expect it to be possible for me since I already took a year off for the military.
It was actually a friend that convinced me to do a gap year. The gap year means that we need to do two internships that add up to 10 months total. Instead we are planning to do two 6 month internships. This still leaves the next summer free for travel. Probably the last summer that we will get on such terms.
There are many benefits to this option. Firstly, these internships will potentially be paid and thus help gather some travelling funds for the summer ahead. Secondly, they will give the option to try different things to figure out what we like. Finally, the summer off, as mentioned before.
Currently I am very eager to get to my internships at the end of the year, yet simultaneously I am scared. This means that I will be entering the professional world full time. I will still have a paper that says that I attend JUNIA HEI, but for the most part, my student days will be over.
This kind of a reality check was abrupt. The so-called real world seems rather scary from outside. There is work and then there is time off, but meeting new people on a constant basis seems difficult once in the real world. Maybe for the better, but from the perspective of a student it seems slightly dull – a routine that repeats over and over.
This is probably simply a misrepresentation that I have created for myself. I wish to be wrong about it, and I do believe that it is a choice to fall into routines or keep living. So maybe we'll figure this out.
