Back on the Slopes

My school has a really cool tradition of organising a week of skiing for its students. Actually, it is not the school, but a school association (like bpm) that organises it. The week and the association are called Wild Week.

The structure is rather straightforward – 100 students that go skiing for a whole week. The trip here was already a bit messy. The bus broke down 8 min away from the final stop – and we had been riding the whole night. Needless to say we were not the happiest but fortunately we got to resolve the situation in under two hours.

After getting our rental skis we waited to get into the apartments until 5 P.M. Then began the settling-in process which was surprisingly smooth and fast. By 6 P.M we were all done. Then we got to the apéro and dinner which turned into a longer run. We finished the day around 01 o'clock.

That being said this was no obstacle to waking up at 07:30 to start prepping to go on the slopes. For some context – we have rooms of five and I am with my old classmates from before the army. So now they are in the fourth year already whilst I am in the third. Anyway – the room is four boys including me and a girl. All of them have been skiing since a young age – they have the touch.

We started Saturday strong – a few reds and blues. Then eventually we wanted to go see a specific slope and of course, the only way down was via a black slope (supposedly the most difficult). There were even signs along the lines of "Very difficult slope – lack of snow". But once on the hill, you have to get down somehow.

That was quite a hurdle for me, I can manage myself on blues, reds and even black slopes for the most part. This slope was just icy bumps for 80% of the way. I did make it down eventually but it took a good amount of time. I was so tired after that that I accidentally drove off a flat slope and almost ended up in a river. But I did not end up in that river so coolio.

I do not regret going on that slope though. I learned a lot and also my friends gave me some reminders and pointers on how to do better. My skiing does not look pretty per se but it gets the work done and it's a good deal as long as I enjoy being on the slopes.

Skiing is dangerous though, the speeds you can get to with so little ease are sometimes scary but that's the beauty of the sport – once that happens you need to embrace the speed. It is a lot easier said than done but once you get to that point it is autoroute as my friend likes to say in French. A satisfying drive on the highway.

Will be staying here for the week so next week I shall maybe update on how the rest of the stay went or will go off rambling about something completely different for a change.

This Week's Suggestions:

🎶 Hava Naguila (Très cher mix):

This is the song we have been playing on repeat for the past days. Seems like it will be the main song for the rest of the week. Completely random, but an absolute banger. Have a listen!

Have a lovely Monday!
